Who is the Comforter?
Let Scripture speak for itself.
In John 14:16–17, Jesus says:
“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
And again in John 14:26:
“But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
From these passages, the identity of the Comforter is made clear:
He is the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit, who dwells in believers—not a future human prophet.
Why the Comforter is the Holy Spirit
1. Clearly identified as the Holy Spirit
Jesus explicitly says in John 14:26 that the Comforter is the Holy Spirit. In Christian belief, the Holy Spirit is not a human being, but God Himself—the third person of the Trinity.
2. Already present with the disciples
Jesus says, “He dwells with you” (John 14:17), meaning the Comforter was already present with them at that time. This cannot refer to someone who would come centuries later.
3. Indwelling presence
Jesus continues, “and will be in you” (John 14:17). This describes an internal, spiritual indwelling—not an external messenger or prophet.
4. Role of teaching and reminding
The Comforter “will teach you all things” and “bring to your remembrance” Jesus’ words (John 14:26). This aligns with the work of the Holy Spirit in guiding believers and inspiring Scripture, not introducing a separate, later revelation.
The Promise Fulfilled
Jesus’ promise was fulfilled shortly after His resurrection.
In Acts 2:1–4, on the Day of Pentecost:
“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind… Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire… And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
The Holy Spirit came just as Jesus promised—about 50 days later—and began dwelling in believers.
Conclusion
The Comforter is not a future figure, but the Holy Spirit, who has already come, who dwells within believers, teaches, guides, and reveals the truth of Christ.
